Wingate Hall Pt. 7

When their last year at Hunter College began Xavier was still talking about an engagement and, though no ring had been forthcoming, Kitty believed him wholeheartedly. Veronica may be the kind of girl you date, but she was the kind you married. Kitty was a blissfully happy woman, but she was the only one.
Maleena had discovered that…horror of horrors…her boyfriend Jodie was poor.
Monica had been asked to trade her boyfriend for another based on hair color.
Veronica was, quite naturally, at the center of the whole mess.

And Elizabeth was busy studying. She was always busy studying. If it weren’t for the bookcase being located in the lounge, she would have disappeared from dorm life completely.

Kitty glared at Maleena in open disgust. “So he’s poor…and? You love him don’t you?” After what she had been through waiting for Xavier to come back to her, Kitty couldn’t imagine letting love go because of a bank balance.
“There is a lot to consider here, how will he take care of me? I have become accustomed to…”
“Accustomed to,” Kitty mimicked, “Please, I was “accustomed to” too and look what happened to my family. My mother thought my father was going to take care of her and now she’s shamed into never leaving the house and legal fees have nearly wiped us out. You should consider taking care of yourself, this isn’t the 1950s.”
Maleena was shocked by Kitty’s vehemence, ever since she and Xavier had gotten together the once quiet follower had gained a self-confidence that bordered on obnoxious.

Maleena was relieved from having to answer when Monica came rushing by her. Turner didn’t, but Veronica did see what was coming, “oh, this isn’t gonna be good,” she thought and backed away.

“What the hell, Turner? Is she really that pretty?” Monica thrust her screaming face at her boyfriend.
“I was just admiring the view, that’s all,” Turner defended himself halfheartedly, he had been waiting for Xavier to set him up with Veronica for weeks.
“You had a view to admire, you jackass,” Monica heard the casual tone and it only angered her more.

Turner was completely astonished when Monica jumped on him, he had been taught not to hit a girl but Monica didn’t hit like a girl. For a while he just tried to restrain her but finding that impossible, he got her in a headlock.
Of course, the ruckus drew a crowd and reactions were mixed. Xavier and Jodie were mortified, while Veronica was oddly encouraging.

When the dust settled, Monica found herself quite literally dumped.

“You are one heartless bastard,” Turner complimented with a laugh when Xavier caught up with him outside the dorm, “but yeah, you’re in!”
“Sweet!” Xavier was so excited to become a full fledged Lamda Chi brother, he knew what being a brother could do for his career after college and his father had been a Lamda, surely his admission would garner him some respect from dear old dad. He wasn’t sure about being called a heartless bastard though.

Monica moped around for days after the fight, even Elizabeth noticed the change in her friend. Xavier noticed too and he was starting to feel badly that the mess was mostly his fault. He thought Randal would call as soon as he heard Monica was available, but he hadn’t and Monica wasn’t sure enough of herself these days to call him.
“Damn it,” he cursed under his breath, “I guess I’ll have to fix this.”

He pulled Monica aside and explained the situation.
“Randal really likes you,” he over-emphasized “really”. Randal did like Monica, but Xavier knew that the whole switch-a-roo had been instigated by Turner who just couldn’t keep his eyes off Veronica. How into the switch Randal had been, Xavier wasn’t sure.
“Look, we’re having an end of semester party at the house, you come and I bet by the end of the night Randal’s shyness disappears,” he encouraged.

Maleena had been looking for assurance that she should follow her heart ever since Kitty called her out and there was no one more honest than her mother.
“So you think it’s ok, mom?” Maleena asked again, still filled with uncertainty.
“Of course it is, dear. For heaven’s sake, your father wasn’t rich when we got married. I worked hard to make him that way,” Maxine revealed.
Veronica stood in the background, shocked that her mother would encourage Maleena’s romance with Jodie. She had been sure that Maxine would put a stop to it and hopefully fix Maleena up with one of her friend’s sons, Veronica really didn’t want to be related to a poor person, even by marriage.

After the sisters returned from Orion Bay, Maleena went in search of Jodie who had been MIA lately, while Veronica collected Monica and dragged her to the Lamda party.
‘Wow, he is interested,’ Monica thought, still slightly amazed. She and Randal had been talking on the phone, but he had never mentioned liking her, ‘maybe he was just shy. and look how happy Veronica is with Turner, I guess she was right all along.”
‘I told her we should switch,’ Veronica gloated, ‘look how much happier everyone is and we all match so nicely.’

Veronica wasn’t prepared for someone to fall out of love with her, actually she hadn’t even considered that it would happen. When she caught Randal having his first kiss with Monica, she let him have it.
‘Damn, these girls can hit,’ Randal had heard all about Monica’s punching power and wasn’t about to get in a fight with Veronica. Monica giggled, glad that Veronica now realized what she had felt just a few days ago. Luckily Veronica’s attention span was that of a two year old and she went in search of her new boyfriend.

She found him in the living room and laying eyes on him, a realization struck her like lightening, “Oh my god!” Monica’s cry distracted Turner from answering his mobile, which was so obviously ringing in his pocket.
“What? What’s wrong?” he asked with great concern.
“I think…I know…oh god, I’ve made a huge mistake!” Veronica answered, looking as if she was about to vomit.

Can you believe this?! This girl gives me headaches!

WOW! I can see how Veronica can give you a headache. It’s nice to see Maxine come out from under her “Keep up with the Jones” attitude and show more of her personality. Perhaps Veronica needs to be dropped into Rigel Heights for extended “community service” before she can inherit her share of the fortune.
edit: Veronica is driving me nuts! I like your idea of having her do community service, that would just kill her lol Maxine fell out of the storyline a bit with all the drama going on with Catherine, but it’s time for her to make a comeback

Oh,Veronica sure was a bad bad girl. Same like my Heath, fickle and annoying. One minute want this and another minute want that. Good that Marleena woke up from her ‘i’m a rich little snob’ dream.
edit: The whole switch was to make Turner and Veronica happy, but she threw me for a loop again lol I think Kitty’s talk and her mother’s revelation had an effect on Maleena, maybe she and Jodie will be happy after all.

LOL Veronica is a mess. Seems like she doesn’t want anybody to be happy but herself. Poor thing.
edit: I never realized it, but you’re absolutely right! She doesn’t seem mean spirited about it (except for her cheering on the fight) she just seems self-centered

HA! I love that Veronica wants Xavier back. That is hilarious. I somehow hoped/thought that would happen. Glad it did!
Whole lots of love triangle mess towards the end, wow. It was all culminating and just waiting to explode.
edit: You hoped and I feared that it would happen. lol Poor, forgotten Kitty deserves to be happy but Veronica isn’t one to deny herself.

Oh wow, I can’t believe Veronica. After doing this to poor Kitty, she has the nerve to want to fall in love with Xavier. >:O I’m glad Maxine allowed Maleena to go out with Jodie, Maxine is so smart. She is honest indeed.
edit: Veronica’s wants are driving me to drink…I may just join Catherine in rehab lol Maxine’s definately the most down-to-earth of the characters, sometimes I wonder where her daughters get their ‘tude
